Aditya Hridayam आदित्यहृदयम्

On the battlefield of Lanka, as Rama stood exhausted facing Ravana, Sage Agastya appeared and taught him this supreme hymn to Surya — the heart of the Sun God. Upon chanting it thrice, Rama was filled with radiance and slew Ravana. This is not just a prayer — it is a weapon of light.

Overview परिचयः

About the Hymn

The Aditya Hridayam is one of the most powerful hymns in the Hindu tradition, found in the Yuddha Kanda (Book of War) of the Valmiki Ramayana, Sarga 107. It was taught by the great sage Agastya to Lord Rama on the battlefield of Lanka, just before the final battle with Ravana.

The word Aditya Hridayam means "The Heart of Aditya (the Sun)" — it reveals the innermost essence and supreme power of the Sun God, who is identified with the Paramatman (Supreme Self).

Structure

  • Introduction (1–3): Setting the scene — Agastya approaches Rama on the battlefield
  • Praise of Surya (4–15): The names, forms, and glories of the Sun God
  • The Prayer (16–24): Direct invocation and worship of Surya
  • Phala Shruti (25–31): Benefits and the narrative conclusion — Rama chants and defeats Ravana
