Purusha Suktam पुरुषसूक्तम्

The Purusha Suktam is one of the most celebrated hymns of the Rig Veda. It describes the cosmic sacrifice of the Supreme Being — the Purusha — from whose body the entire universe, the Vedas, the seasons, the animals, and the four Varnas emerged. It is the foundational hymn of Vedic cosmology.

About the Suktam

The Purusha Suktam (पुरुषसूक्तम्) is one of the most important and widely chanted hymns in Vedic literature. It appears in the Rig Veda (10.90), the Taittiriya Aranyaka (3.12), the Vajasaneyi Samhita (31.1–6), and the Sama Veda, testifying to its central importance across all Vedic traditions.

The Rishi is Narayana. The Devata is Purusha (the Supreme Being). The Chandas (metre) is Anushtup and Trishtup.

Structure

  • Mantras 1–5: Description of the Cosmic Purusha — His infinite nature, transcendence, and immanence
  • Mantras 6–10: The Cosmic Sacrifice — How the Devas performed the first sacrifice using Purusha as the offering
  • Mantras 11–16: Creation from the Sacrifice — The emergence of the Varnas, animals, Vedas, seasons, and the entire cosmos
